Project Nursery: Furniture

If you remember back form this post we decided to go with the Tarva dresser from Ikea. It was budget friendly and easy to paint.

I decided I wanted to do an ombre look on the dresser. Since we can't paint the walls I wanted the furniture to have pops of colors. We chose to do just the drawers in varying shades of blue ( behr paint top:  ice cube, Middle: adriatic mist, Bottom:balmy seas ). Doing ombre on furniture is super easy just pick a paint ship with the varying shades of your color choice. All the guess work is done for you.

 

 We ditched the wood knobs that came with the dresser and picked up these brass knobs from Home Depot.

My only issue is the top and middle color are very similar. This wasn't the case on the swatch. I just don't think it was matched very well. Also, I thought I could get sample sizes in the blue paints but they only make them in flat paint..yuck!! So now i have all this left over paint. I also have to go back and stain the middle leg. Kinda forgot about that one.

We also got a small night stand (rast from ikea) for beside the rocker.

I decided to stain the bottom part below the door to help match the other pieces of furniture. The drawers are white ( i can't remember the exact shade)  and the side is our middle shade of blue

 ( adriatic mist). I still need two more knobs. Obviously pregnant women can't count correctly :)

We are finished with all the furniture projects except extra knobs and touch ups.

Here is what we have left to do in the nursery:

• Finish putting up our map wall. I ran out of our paper with about 1 1/2 strips left. Frustrating!!! It is going to be a really cool back drop for his crib. I am excited to share it with you when it's finished.
• Decorations put up. I have the wall above his changing table / dresser finished. I need to figure out what to put on the other walls. I think on our other large wall I want to put his newborn pictures. That will have to be a project at a later date. I am planning on having my mom help me finish the decorating when she gets here. 
• Bedding- the blanket is all but finished. I need to finish the hem around the edge. My sewing machine was pissing me off so it was either break the machine or take a break from sewing. I will put a tutorial up on how I made it when it is finished. It is super easy if you have a cooperative sewing machine. I just need to do the crib skirt but wanted to wait till the crib is here so I know the measurements are 100% accurate.
• These are the main things left to do everything else is just little things here are there.

Nursery Plan

This past weekend was spent rearranging our bedroom. We needed to make room for the pack n play and our current layout just wasn't working. After taking the bed apart and removing pretty much everything in the room we then started bringing it all back in.  I used a room planner ( icovia ) to map out the new layout. It made everything so much easier. Our rooms are not huge so it's important to have something that is functional and still maximizes our space. I also reorganized the closet to allow for Eric's clothes to be moved from the extra bedroom to my closet. Now with our bedroom done it's time start organizing the babies room which is currently my office. This also means we will need to relocate and downsize my office :-/

Here is the layout we came up with for the babies room:

I spent alot of time trying to find a dresser I wanted to use in the babies room. I searched craigs list and some consignment shops. I wanted something modern and retro to fit with his baby bed.

The only thing we found that was even close to our price range was this.

the plan would be to paint it, but decided it would be way to much of an effort to get it where it needs to be before we could even think about painting it. That's when I decided to go with the Tarva from Ikea.  It has similar lines to the mid century piece I like but will be way easier to paint.

 

A few other pieces I would like to get from Ikea are the rast and the expedit shelving for extra storage.  The rast I want to put next to the rocker and I have a fun paint idea for it. The expedit we plan to add legs to look something like this, but without the drawers.

Here is what we have come up with so far for Channing's room.

1. misty and gray chevron curtains at $129 bucks these are out of the questions.

The fun thing about these is the chevron is in the fabric collection we are using for 

the bedding. These will be an easy diy using the Merete curtains from ikea and cost 

around $40 to make.

2. Nautical map wallpaper on the wall behind the crib. I was going to use a bunch of nautical charts but calculated it would cost about $130 for one wall.  No thanks! This wall paper should be much easier and since we are renting I have an idea of how to do the wall paper

 with out it being permanent :)

3. crib is from target and part of the babyletto collection

4. Tarva dresser will also be used as a changing table. We will paint it similar to the crib and add an ombre effect to the front and some brass knobs.

5. Bedding. This is the idea I came up with for the blanket. I'll also be doing a crib skirt using the blue strips and chevron fabric. The total cost for this should be about $70.

6. Herringbone rug from urban outfitters. You really can't beat $89 for a 5x7 rug.

7. Great grandmothers rocker redone in a gray linen fabric

Now to just find the time and money to start on these projects :)

nursery ideas

Since our lease is up at the end of Jan. the chances of us having a nursery done before the baby is here is pretty slim. I plan on having things pretty much together before the baby is here so I am ok with not having a nursery till after. That way when we get into a new place the major things will be done. It's not like he will be sleeping in there right away anyway.

We pretty much new from the beginning if we had a boy we wanted to use nautical pieces. Eric used to be in the navy so he really likes this idea. I don't like in your face themes so there will just be touches here and there. We will also be going with a cooler color scheme. Not your navy, green, and reds like you normally see. 

These are the colors we will be using. The first three are the main colors with the orange just begin used as a pop of color here and there.

Our crib is from the Babyletto line from target.

1. I decided a long time ago I wanted to make my own baby bedding. Bedding sets are so expensive and seem to always come with a bumper ( no longer suggested to be used). I decided to make the crib skirt, a blanket, and I am going to try my hand at at least one sheet. I am hoping this will be way more economical. I had a really hard time finding fabric in the colors we liked. I finally came across Could 9 Fabrics in Simpatico.

These are the three main fabrics I plan to use. As well as some of this orange fabric for small details.

For the blanket my first intension was just to do it in all one fabric on the front and a different color for the binding. Now I may do a quilt. I want something a little more modern looking.

These are a few ideas I am thinking about. I may end up making my own pattern in the end.

We also plan to refurbish an old rocker that was my great grandmothers.

Here is a similar rocker so you can see what it will look like with batting, foam and fabric.

I would also like to do a library wall.
